I've noticed more noise in long exposures from my 7D compared to my 40D too. Like half a second or longer exposures generate noise on the 7D where I never used to notice it on the 40D. I was surprised at the difference! (mostly noticed when shooting macro from a tripod)

If the riders are distracted by your flash they're not concentrating on where they are going. I've been on both sides of the camera many times....it's no real problem, just don't fire it full power in the rider's face ;)

I'll consider switching if Sony make a rival for the Canon MP-E 65mm;). I don't really use AF for much these days so it doesn't really make much odds to me.
Eye control was one of the reasons I got an eos 3...works a treat for me. I find it was much faster than scrolling through dozens of AF points as you could go straight to the one you wanted if you could work it. These days I reckon Canon call some AF points AF assists points that you can't...
