    Magnets, mobile phones and DSLRs

If you are really worried, get yourself a little aluminium card case like this one; it's not a wall impenetrable to magnetic fields, but will give a bit of distance between the magnet and the card, they aren't powerful magenets on those enclosures anyway. Whatever you do though, don't put a...

If you think baiting / staging is bad... This is worse.

There is a good "artists impression" of what the result would look like; It's absolutely ridiculous though, just why?

Is it silly to get an 85mm f1.8 as my first lens?

Sounds like a reasonable plan to me to get a body and 50mm, but I'd hang back a smidge on the 85mm f1.8 for a short time. Master the nifty, then it'll illustrate any shortcomings from the lens rather then technique. Would it be fair to say you love the results you've seen from others with an...

    Canon 24-70 f4, 24-105 f4, 17-55 f2.8 or what?

IS isn't the be all and end all though is it? I use one on a crop body and find it exceptional. Colours are great with it and such a clear image with no chromatic issues right into the corners. But that said, I've seen sharp Tamrons and soft Canons so even being manufactured in a controlled...

    Canon 24-70 f4, 24-105 f4, 17-55 f2.8 or what?

Canon will never make an EFS mount L, the range is geared towards "prosumer" where most of the bodies are full frame and need a higher lens iq and are not as forgiving especially regarding corner drop off. Consider what you are going to be left with if you upgrade to ff though. The second hand...

Please put me out of my misery

Have you tried eoscount.com? Usually only works with IE for some reason.

    Basic equipment help!

You don't necessarily need anything as mentioned above, aside from a memory card and possibly a bag! Find your own shooting style and get what you need to do it how you want to. I used to carry my first SLR with it's only lens attached on top of a jumper in a rucksack, then upgraded to an ALDI...

    Lighting shiny cylinders

Have you tried increasing the distance between subject and front cards to get a little spread (at the risk of a bit of light loss)?

Beginner Are prime lenses all they're cracked up to be?

Yes, especially given the focal range even a small zoom covers. I don't speak Nikon but as a comparison the Canon 100-400L is mostly sharp but softens up the big end compared to the 400L even though at 400mm they are both wide open at f5.6 Consider one as trying to do a lot more well versus...

    Swiss Prices

Yes actually I do, and I take it very seriously. Over 12 Toblerones were consumed over the course of my trip and I can honestly say it tastes exactly the same there as it does here. There is a much bigger selection of sizes available up to a monster CHF 134 thing which was about 4' long and 7kgs.

    Swiss Prices

Import VAT/Duties.......yeah. Just to caveat that yes, obviously don't just assume you can stick in a rucksack and brazenly walk through the Nothing to Declare area at London Gutonsted and not have to pay that.

    Swiss Prices

Had a few minutes to kill at Geneva airport, all the prices are in Swiss Francs - currently around 1.46/£ you should be able to click through to a bigger one on flickr. Just thought it may interest someone - Easyjet have some uber cheap flights and theres Toblerone everywhere. DSC_1665...

    Staff portrait

And don't deliberately take a bad shot with shocking, distorting processing and a terrible shopped in background in the hope you'll never be asked again. 6 years ago I was working for a company and did just that - to this day the MD has the photo as his linkedin profile photo.

    Beginner Internal property photography.

In a past life I used to do interiors, including a lot of repeat work by a company who made static caravans which are really small. Even on a crop it is possible to get a good shot even in a teeny spot with 17mm, it's also possible to get too much in at 10mm. You can get a good image showing two...
