Would go for 40mm screws min and if you want to test put 18kg of bricks on overnight. Alsoit depends on the construction of the wall.

It is a surface mount switching diode which a net search will find. An equivalent is 1N4448HWS. Look at smaller suppliers like bobsbits else you will need to buy 100or so. Old solder including lead could let you have enough for a smd.

Electronic microscopes are very good these days and have a good price range. Also very easy to use. Kits are all well and good but are either too simplistic or expensive and would estimate that many are never finished or small components lost, Christmas should be a fun time where he can be up...
