Please excuse the Newbie-ness of this but what are the flower type lens hoods for? Am i right that it's to keep the sun out of the lens etc or when are they a good idea to use?

I know what you mean but my concern is that I'd either not need the extra features or not have a clue how to use.

As a newbie I'm looking to get one of these but can't decide which. I've found CS5 extended for under £200 as I have a daughter at college so money's not a major factor. I know CS5 will do more but will I need this over what Elements9 can do in a more user friendly package (useful for numpties...

After a couple of hours play, the thing that amazes me the most is how well shots come out in quite gloomy rooms without the need for the flash.

Hi Guys, After being inspired by the pictures on here I've just bought my first DLSR, A Canon 550d with a EFS 17-85mm lens. Just need to learn how to use it now! Cheers, Chris
