Thanks for the advice. I will try this out. Been thinking of getting a hot shoe mic anyway just in two minds if I'll look like a tool using it when most people video things with discreet camera phones and there's me with a giant dslr with hot shoe mic and huge furry wind suppressor ;)

They look good and a great price. I guess my next question is someone who is new to using flash will I get on with them considering they don't have TTL? Is it better to learn how to manually use a flash rather than dive into a TTL setup?

I'm thinking of buying the canon 300mm f4. I'm hoping to use it with a monopod. As the lens has a tripod mount on it will it screw straight into the monopod or will I need a tripod head? Apologies if this is (as I suspect) a daft question. Thanks :)
