If your iphone is Jailbroken you can use a piece of software called PDANET but neither apple nor UK providers would condone it's use. If you tether any way other than by paying your provider for the service, technically it'd be illegal. The cheap way to do it would be pay as you go dongle.

I use the epson R1800 and get fantastic results. That isn't a recommendation however because you're right.
