    which walk about lens

I have a similar dilema at the moment - not happy with the 18-55 IS kit lens and have a 70-300 Sigma but need something a little shorter for walkabout and the Sigma 17-70 looks favourite for the money - but very little seems to be said about them.

Flashgun for Canon EOS400D for around £150. Black tie events photographs

Another vote here for the 430EXII ... superb bit of kit! As for batteries... I use these - http://cpc.farnell.com/BT00075 very cheap for a multipack of 40 and last easily as long per cell as Duracell.

Can you use a mic stand instead of a flash stand?

Mic stands are available with either 5/8" or 3/8" thread (or both using thread adaptors) ... sadly being a newbie im not sure what thread the flash stands have.

Another 450D user (newbie) here... only got the 18-55mm IS lens at the moment. The camera is ace - its my first DSLR and so far I have not worked out how to use any of the settings other that auto so I have some learning to do.

    Hi All

Cheers for the warm welcome guys  as yet I havent been out with the new camera... just shopping round for deals on lenses and flash units. I have settled on a Canon Speedlite 430EXII flash... just got to sort the lens now! Its likely to be a Sigma 70-300 or 18-200 ... not sure yet

Hi All, Complete newbie here :D I have just bought a Canon EOS450D and now the fun starts.... Having played about with a compact digital in the past and always been frustrated by its limitations I decided its time for a decent bit of kit and also to learn how to use settings other than...
