If you want to learn more, i can recommend any books by Scott Kelby - love him or hate him I find his informal style of writing really easy to understand

What camera to buy for a newbie like me...

My two pence worth - you can't go far wrong with the Nikon D3100, perfect for beginners, lacks a few of the more advanced features but you wont need them until further down the road and as it's Nikon any lenses you buy will be compatible with future camera bodies. They can be picked up brand...

    Nikon EN-EL14 Battery

been using it for a week and no issues, it came in a genuine Nikon box, with warranty. There are cheaper, non-nikon versions on there, but they arent worth the money IMHO

    Macro & Autofocus

Thanks for the input, looks like i'll invest the money saved by not getting autofocus into getting a longer length macro lens. Is there any situation in which you'd prefer a shorter, (say 40mm) lens compared to a longer (105mm) one?

    Macro & Autofocus

Potentially daft question - I'm looking to purchase a macro lens - is it worthwhile paying the extra for an AF-S lens, or should I save some cash by going for an AF lens (which would be manual focus on my d3100 body) I can't see how auto focus would be beneficial for macro; its not exactly...

    ND Filters

Does anyone have any experience of using variable ND filters? Are they generally OK (assuming i get a decent brand), or am I better off getting a set of stackable x1, x2, x4 filters

    Essential Reading

All brilliant thanks guys. Keep em' coming! I've ordered Scott Kelbys digital photography vol 2 from amazon, (only a penny plus postage!) is it worth looking at the other volumes in that series? Some comments are saying there is a lot of repeated material. Will try and spend some time this...

    Essential Reading

Is there any essential literature - i.e. books, magazines, websites, tutorials - that you have found helpful whilst learning photography? Anything you think has influenced you massively? Anything you'd avoid like the plague?

    First pic

I've just ventured into the world of DSLR after using a compact camera to take pictures for years. I purchased a Nikon D3100 Kit, and this is my first post on here, so thought I'd include my first picture as well. (Well, first picture I think looks OK out of the hundreds I've taken!). I've...
