    Film Developing in the UK

There is every likelihood that other labs use a Fujifilm Frontier scanner, as we do. During the scanning process the operator can select an automatic mode where values are decided upon by the scanner or a manual mode where each frame is evaluated and scanned, making changes to colour and...

Scans can be saved to a USB you provide in place of a CD. :)

    Film Developing in the UK

When scanning on our Frontier, we will make adjustments on a per frame basis to ensure as much detail is extracted from the film as possible. Arguably this could be construed as 'the premium', though it is equally possible that other labs on your list do the same. If you want the best quality...

    Film Developing in the UK

Hi excalibur2, Flatbeds have two significant issues when it comes to producing high quality scans from film. The glass platen. As with photographing through a window, glass softens the clarity of the negative and can produce a colour cast. The motion of the scan head. A moving scan head...

    Getting back to film...

If you're local, you could check out West Yorkshire Cameras, to be found in Leeds Corn Exchange. Great guys there, with a shop packed full of gear to suit all pockets. They even have a darkroom if you fancy trying your hand at some B&W printing.

    Film Developing in the UK

Like Matt, we find discussing resolution to be problematic. It would seem there are several ways to approach resolution and individuals are happiest dealing with resolution through their preferred method. This preference, in terms of film, is usually established by an individual's most common...

    Help with spot removal

Does it really need the texture mask if it will have subsequent softening, that's a good question. I'm going to say it does and it doesn't, but that really depends on your client's order and how quickly you can accomplish it. If this is a commercial job, there is a cost attached to your time...

Weird Colours on a fully Profiled System

Is the embedded colour profile the same for both images? There is a quick way to check embedded colour profile in PS by changing the option on the info bar (at the bottom of a windowed image) to 'Document Profile'. I have attached a pic...

    Help with spot removal

Some great post production examples so far!!! Always difficult to retouch areas along the edge of lighting. With a bit more work, detail could be added to the highlights (if you wanted to) as at #fee6ce it's not yet clipped so a texture mask would add in a slight skin texture. There is still...

    Capture one pro 8

I use CO for my own process and at work with some top tier Phase One digital backs. CO is well regarded amongst commercial photographers for its detail both across tonal ranges and in terms of pixels (sharpening..etc..). It's certainly a departure from Adobe's way of doing things and for those...

    Film Developing in the UK

Slightly off topic, but our friends at West Yorkshire Cameras will be moving to a new premises which will also house a dark room for hire, as well as tuition on how to process and print by hand. Worth checking out for anyone local!

    Developing and scanning

Trevor, have you tried splitting the channels (sorry if this is how you do it anyway)? With an image open, open the Channels palette, click on the channel's menu icon and select 'Split Channels'. This will separate your open image into 3 images, with each new image representing a single channel...

Extraordinary uses for a plactic 35mm film container.

Geocaching is a great idea as is the flash diffuser. We have hundreds of the things stashed away here at the lab (I keep thinking about creating a sculpture) so I made up a little geocache / postal container. We use them for sending out processing vouchers and mailers.

Beginner Darkroom equipment - Black and white developing.

Michael, it's worth considering the films you want to shoot with and if there is a developer (or dilutions that will allow you to use a single developer) that will accommodate all these films. We find id-11 is pretty robust and works well for a whole range of B&W films. As absoujaparov rightly...

    2nd hand dedicated 35mm scanners

I'd agree with this wholeheartedly. I used to use a Canoscan 9500f for scanning shots from my RB. Silverfast was better than the Canoscan software, but the 2 significant issues were (1) The fact that you're scanning through glass (2) The scanning head is constantly moving = vibrating. Dedicated...
