Ok thanks for confirming that. I guess I need to do more research into lighting techniques because it seems that shooting through an umbrella would be similar (in my simple head anyway :) ), so I guess I need to understand a bit better how these give different results. The other thing I don't...

Thanks again. The Wescott says you can either bounce or shoot through, which in my mind means I have 2 options to get different types of light on the subject. With the Lastolite do I still use my flashgun and shoot through, rather than bounce, so it acts as more of a softbox...?

Thanks for the reply. I won't lie - I'm not sure what most of the stuff you're selling is...

Thanks! Well not for the bit about not having white backgrounds! Argh if only I had read that before. But I do like the results (sort of) I'm getting now. I also have a black background on order. Should I cancel that one...? As for your suggestions on the umbrella - thanks for that too...

Hi all I have recently started taking pictures of my son (8 months) using the following kit: Tamron 2.8 17-55 Canon 50mm 1.8 Mk II Canon 500D 1x Canon 430 EXII (can be off camera if required) 1x Lencarta background support 1x 3x6m white background This has given me the following...

    Amateur shooting - backgrounds

Thanks for that - it is clearly explained and I see what you've done. What does confuse me slightly is that the backgrounds seem to be a very standard size (3mx3m or 6mx3m) but the supports are all able to bet set smaller (in terms of width), so is the only way to use the backdrops with the...

That's brill, thanks for the info! Stupid question alert! Anyone feel free to chip in here... The muslin background is 3mx6m....and the frame can adjust to be smaller than 3m (say 1m), so can that background be made smaller too, in order to fit the now smaller frame? I'm sure the answer...

Apart from the frame being made of steel I can't see much difference between spending £130 and £65 - perhaps the steel is worth it :) but maybe I'm leaning towards the cheaper one!

Michael - the link I posted for the background was to a muslin background (nylon), so different to paper?

Thanks Michael, so perhaps something like this: http://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/3412929/10-x-20-ft-muslin-photo-backdrop-background Up to about £130 with the steel frame, which makes the original £65 for a frame + 6x3m backdrop quite attractive :)

So if I stretch to an extra £40, then I could get the steel support: http://www.lencarta.com/lighting-store/backgrounds-a-supports/backgrounds-supports-1/background-support-system and the white background...

Thanks both. The lastolite looks great but currently we need the whole thing to be collapsable so it can be easily stored when not used. Excuse the naivety but what do you mean lighting the background and subject? Obviously I understand the words, but how is that achieved? :) We've already...

    Amateur shooting - backgrounds

Hi all Long time since I've been on here, much to do with the fact I now have an 8 month old boy, which is part of the reason for this post. I want to get some nice pictures of him/us and I want to get a backdrop since most of my pictures (in my opinion) look really nice with the exception...
