My current PC is on its last legs. I managed to get a new i7 cheap but it's got XP installed. Unfortunately I can't find my windows 7 disk, although I made a note of the serial number. Does anyone know if I can download a copy from MS? It's a genuine retail copy, not OEM, and I'm quite happy to...
Photoshop will always support the main manufacturers' raw formats. That is, the current version of their formats. But manufacturers change their formats periodically and it's very expensive for adobe to retain backward compatibility. When you're capturing CR5 files don't be surprised if your...
One other reason to use dng is for archival purposes. DNG is an open, cross-manufacturer standard with strong support from adobe. There's a very good chance that when you try to open your proprietary raw formats (cr2, nef etc) in photoshop in 10 years time it will fail. The proprietary formats...
Thanks hsuffyam. The transformer is the one I'd like to use if it can support my workflow. I've heard that Android doesn't support raw files but I've seen apps that should work. Then all I need is a compact flash reader (don't fancy replacing all my cards with wifi cards!)

I like the idea of using a tablet for backing up my photos while travelling. Ideally I'd like to plug in my compact flash cards directly into the tablet to copy my raw (.nef) files, view them, delete the duds and then copy the remainder to my pc at home for final edit.
Any specific tablets...

I'm a...
Glad some of you found that article as useful as I did.
Simon, thanks for the referral. Haven't finished the video but it looks really useful. Have been wondering about sharpening in camera raw vs PhotoShop since reading Real World Camera Raw recently (highly recommended for beginners like me...
Found it! Highly recommend http://ronbigelow.com/articles/sharpen1/sharpen1.htm and the subsequent articles. Starts with the basics if sharpness and follows on to a clear guide on how to tune the parameters.
Sorry for posting such a silly question but hope some of you find the articles useful.
Shot in the dark question:
A few months ago I found a great article on the web about raw sharpening. It's a subject I find tricky but this article made it all click. Unfortunately I've lost the address!
I'd really appreciate any pointers to relevant articles. I may not find the original but...
Thanks to everyone for such great feedback! It's given me the confidence to go ahead and lay out a chunk of cash with the confidence I'm not going to regret it later :).
The 400 f2.8 seems the best balance of reach, quality and aperture but unfortunately it's over my budget (unless anyone...
