    Sony A580 button failure

Thanks, everyone for the replies. Don't think remapping the button is possible on my camera - will give Sony a call. I think I can guarantee it would never work again if I tried to fiddle with it. Good to hear positive things about Sony service.

    Sony A580 button failure

Hi all. My Sony A580 display button has started to fail - now have to press it really hard to get it to function. Anyone any idea if this is likely to be economic to get repaired, or if it can be replaced by myself? Really like the camera and don't want to have to get a new one. Cheers, Burry

    Fast Kids & Focus Points

Anyone used Sony Alpha BBF? My A580 seems to lock exposure when I press the back button as well as focus, so if I press it and recompose I can get the exposure quite wrong at times. I would have thought I'd use the AEL button as well, if I wanted this to happen. Can't find any settings to change...

    Lightroom 5 released

I find it similar to LR4.4, but I do find the whole thing a little snappier in general. I'm using the smart previews and they do seem to speed up the develop module on my pc. (i5, 4Gb RAM, 500GB HDD). I wasn't sure about doing the upgrade from LR4.4, but the trial version of LR5 was definitely a...

    Sony A580 back-focus fixed I think

Yes, I agree. I am pretty new at all this and could well be wrong, but my hope is that all the lenses were back-focussing the same and that I just didn't notice as the other lenses tend to have much greater depths of field (just the standard kit lenses). I didn't really see a problem on the 50mm...

    Sony A580 back-focus fixed I think

Hi all Just wanted to shout out loud - I think I have at last fixed the back-focussing issue on my A580. Finally plucked up the courage to have a go at the "3 screws on the bottom" solution to adjust the auto focus sensor. The back focussing on my 50mm 1.8 has been really bugging me (thought...

    F1.8 - hard to focus

I'm using centre point focus. When recomposing, the danger is that you move forward or back slightly. When dof is so shallow, that can throw out the focus. Agree that 1.8 is sometimes too wide. This all started with me trying to decide if the camera was back focussing. I decided it isn't, but my...

    F1.8 - hard to focus

Thanks guys. Will try seeing if af-c helps. The focus-recompose idea does cause me problems with dof this shallow. Will keep practising - I think that is the real issue here.

    F1.8 - hard to focus

Hi all. I'm practising with my 50mm 1.8 and trying to nail focus consistently, when using f1.8. I know the lens may be sharper if I stop down a bit but i'm simply trying to improve my technique. I think the camera (Sony a580) is not back or front focussing, but with the small dof, I am finding...

    Histogram help

Thanks, Richard as well. I have learned more in a couple of posts than I have for ages trawling the web.

    Histogram help

Thanks for your reply, Tim. That helped me quite a lot - very clear. Fair point as well about my use of the term over-expose. It does make more sense to say +EC in the context i used. Cheers.

    Histogram help

Hi all. I'm just starting to try and get to grips with using the histogram and have been trying to find out as much as possible on the web. I understand the idea of avoiding clipping highlights / shadows and how the histogram can show this, and I realise there is no one shape a histogram should...

Probably a very stupid Filter question.

I have found that with my old sony A230, I couldn't tell the difference between images taken with my (rather cheap) UV filter and those taken without. With my newer A580, the images are definitely softer taken with the filter in place. It almost looks like the camera has trouble focussing...

    LR3 vs LR4

I bought the educational version from Amazon. Emailed scanned copies of my teacher payslip and had the code back in just a couple of hours. Did the same with lightroom and also only took a couple of hours. Was very straightforward.

    Processing of in-camera JPEG

Hi all. More curious than anything else - I have a question about the JPEG that a camera makes (assuming it had been set to do so). If you leave it on 1 particular scene setting (e.g. landscape), does it always apply the same JPEG conversion settings (saturation, sharpness etc) or is it...
