Another vote for the canon 1000d. iv had mine for about a year great camera, lenses are cheap for learning and it produces some great shots. i felt that jumping from a point and shoot to a full size dslr a bit scary, the 1000D is slightly smaller and quite light.

My friend signed up to it over xmas! a bit too expensive for me but read his first 2 modules and it seems detailed. He seems happy with it but it depends what you want from it. the downside really is that your not in a class to meet and discuss tips, ideas etc
