I use tracing paper (about 120gm/sq.m weight) and adhere it to the film plane with a smear of Pritt adhesive (solid glue in a stick, I pinch my 10 year old daughter's!). Tracing paper is easy to cut to size for different cameras and the glue simply wipes off with your hanky.
Like you chelt I was given a Nikon body, an F90 in my case, and had to start learning about Nikon lenses. Eventually I opted for the Nikkor AF-D 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 as a starting point and I think it's great.
I wouldn't have said that the Ilford Sportsman was a rubbish camera. I have the very basic model with the Vario 3 speed shutter and used sympathetically it can turn out decent pictures. The top of the range model (Sportsman Manumatic) had a Rodenstock f2.8 lens and a shutter speeded to 1/500th...
