I was once stopped on the South Bank (of the Thames) while using a NikonD50 on a tripod at night. The private security guard said that I looked like a proffesional as I had a tripod and that I needed a permit. He added that if I was a tourist or student it would be ok but as I obviously wasn't...
The only thing I can add to this is my worry that the practice of telling these people to "f*** off" gives the complainer the impression that the photographer is another loudmouth idiot. There are a lot more words that can be used of a more acceptable nature before having to reduce oneself down...

I would be amazed if this sort of thing has not happened before if the coats are in an open area, they must take a bit of the blame I would have thought
