I borrowed a 2x for the first time the other day. Definitely a reduction in quality but not bad stopped down. Just a lack of contrast makes images look softer than they are. Great lens with the 1.4x though.

The guy that runs that blog lives just down the road from me and I've been to the pub with him a couple of times. He has certainly put in many many hours work and doesn't give you his secrets easily! Nice guy tho.
