The other thing with a 50 is the lack of ability to zoom which at an event is a requirement in my opinion plus you can't get up nice and close either. I never use anything longer than my 17-40 to be honest.
Aye a girl I know shoots events with a 400D and an 18-55 and gets some great results. I didn't get the 11-16 for this sort of stuff but it is a very handy piece of glass if you are close up and it is great wide open.
I use 661 Comp Gloves as I am on my bike a lot when out taking photos and these have great feel as they are not too thick and my shutter fingertip has a nice grippy bit on.
Depends what you want really but I settled for a Manfrotto 488RC2 Ball head on mine as I like the freedom of movement with a ball head and the fact I don't have to fiddle with lots of controls like I did when I had a 3 way head.
My guess is if the guy has just got a 7D then he isn't looking at full frame just yet. My advice, as always, would be for the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 cos it is a beast.
