I went to the water polo test event last month. I had a front row seat and found that a 70-200mm (on a FF camera) was fine so your 55-200 will be OK too. Lighting was very good so was able to shoot at 1/1000s, f3.5, ISO1250.
I would also suggest a wide lens for shots of the venues.
Some...
The A77 is a worthy upgrade but try the EVF out in a shop to decide if you like it or not first. I went from the A700 to a A850 two years ago and I would do the same today as I find the EVF refresh rate too low.
That's an old list from last year. The most recent info on restricted items is:

In terms of gear the following are not allowed: Large photographic and broadcast equipment over...
Which version of the lens do you have (there are 4)? Some of the older ones were known to be soft at the long end of the zoom range. Also Sigma are a bit lax with their quality control which results in some significant sample variability.
It's an old manual focus MD mount lens. Won't work on a Sony DSLR.
The adapter he speaks of will have an extra lens in it which will degrade the quality. The results are better than a 70-300G? That's known as fibbing!
I can't believe someone has offered £260 for it.
You can get adapters and the best place to find them is Ebay. Due to the registration differences between the mounts the adapters have a lens to enable focus to infinity and this degrades the image quality somewhat.

Urban myth.
If you pixel peep at 100% it looks like there is more noise with the higher MP sensor as you have more noisy pixels however the total amount of noise in the image does not change. What you get is finer grained noise from the smaller pixels which actually produces better results...
Adobe PS CS5 will initially show you the RAW as is. It'll look very flat and lifeless. It's up to you to do the post processing. IDC will take the RAW and attempt to recreate the in-camera JPG processing (creative style, etc.) before displaying the image.
The IDC approach is probably better for...
The cameras in your budget are the A290 & A390 but they have 14MP CCD sensors which are great at low ISO but suck in terms of high ISO noise. I think your best bet would be the A550 which is slightly higher than your budget at £399 (http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod1177.html) but would be...
For portraits a FF camera will give you better DOF control. The A900 is an excellent camera and to do better you have to look at a D3X.
Some have but many more have moved to Sony from Canon or Nikon.
Personally, the Canon ergonomics irritate me and Nikon doesn't have a high MP camera that...

Anyone here go to Focus on imaging last year? Was it worth going?
I've just won a pair of tickets for the show from Sony. Maybe they'll chuck in some freebies.
