I know the basics, I've done a short course. I just guess that I'm not confident. Is it better to set to program, aperture priority or shutter speed priority?

I have been asked to take a photo of the local football team and don't know if I should use the kit lens on my Sony A200 or would I need a different lens. Also if I used the kit lens what settings I would use? Help please because I haven't got a clue.
