One thing that I don't has been mentioned is that a 1 stop change in aperture is a change in the f number by a factor of about 1.4 to the f number (I believe it's actually square root of 2). e.g. 4 - 5.6 - 8 - 11 - 16.
A 1 stop change is the same as doubling/halving the shutter speed or ISO.
Apologies, I may have misread/misinterpreted your post. I'd read the "you can't get wider" part as not being able to get wider than 18 on a lens with a similar range of zoom.
I'll agree that wider and/or longer isn't always better, and accept that you are going to have to compromise going for...
