What New Gear Have You Purchased This Week?

Canon 24-105 f/4 L USM. Haven't had much chance to use it yet but it seems a great piece of kit to me. Alan

    Would you take your laptop?

If you're hiring a car then surely you can recharge the laptop from the lighter socket so power shouldn't be a problem. They seem to get heavier the longer you have to carry them though and I would keep it out of sight as much as possible, just like I would out and about in the UK. Alan

Review Meike Battery Grip for Canon 550D/600D/650D With 2 Extra Batteries for £26.22!!!

I've had mine for about 18 months now and it's been faultless. The batteries that came with it are still going so very good value for money. Alan

Metric and Imperial mix and match.

These don't inspire much confidence, http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_major_engineering_blunders_were_results_of_faulty_measurement One space probe missed Venus and another missed Mars due to faulty conversion of metric/imperial units!! Alan

It's just as bad in in met/aviation. Vertical distances measured in feet (unless you're in Russia) and horizontal distances i metres or Km. Alan

Photo Preservation in the Digital Age

You won't pick them up for a fiver a cake though will you. I use a USB caddy and two 1TB SATA discs to back up from my PC's internal drive. If the house burns down I'll lose it all but I won't lose anything if only one drive fails, or even two but since I'm not running a business I'm OK with...

    Privatisation of search and rescue

The State has no money, only what it takes from taxpayers. The rest of your arguments have been settled in court by CND activists who tried to hold back a portion of their taxes as they disagreed with nuclear weapons. They lost. Tax is not insurance. You have to have insurance to drive a car...

    Privatisation of search and rescue

Not singling anyone out - but in France if you get airlifted off the mountain you get the bill. Which is why they all have insurance, why should the state, ie taxpayers pick up the bill - it's not cheap to provide SAR helicopter cover. You mention careless drivers, well the NHS does claim...

    Privatisation of search and rescue

The military side of SAR was established for the rescue of downed pilots. I don't recall it happening but if a military aircraft went in whilst the helicopter was rescuing a yachtie or walker then they would be left so that the helicopter could carry out its' primary role. French people know...

    Privatisation of search and rescue

This kind of thing happens all the time http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-west-wales-21610289 If the service is privatised then these idiots who walk up Snowdon in stupid clothing should get billed for their rescue. In France any skier has to take out insurance to cover the cost of their...

    Millets going out of business?

Here in Shrewsbury we had a Millets and a Blacks just across the road from each other. The Blacks has now gone but the Millets is still open. Alan

Handing over money for goods in a shop maybe but surely no-one in their right mind would buy online with a debit card or pay cash for gift vouchers again. Alan

    Most beautiful aircraft?

Don't know why so many people picked the Victor - it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Prop - Mosquito Jet - Lightning I might have chosen the Vucan had I not served 3 years at Waddington Alan (30 years in the RAF - 1970-2000)
