Are tripods fitted with universal mounts? For example, does a Manfrotto ball head fit to Giottos legs. I'm assuming that they use the same screw fitting which cameras have for the fixing plate, but not sure if that's the case?

Rubber for me too. As the actress said to the Bishop. Actually, it's not just that it has a better feel to it, it offers more protection to the point that you could drop the D300 and merely watch it bounce, rather than shatter.
Can't speak for anyone else, but I also sold my D700 for a D300 for the simplest of simple reasons - money. I got credit crunched. And have to say as much as I love my D300, it gets beaten hands down on just about everything by the D700. :'(
