An update. Thanks to some sterling efforts from Joe at Redsnapper, I now have a RS-283 & RSH-528 Head, and both are excellent pieces of kit. The only gutting thing is that since placing the order and receiving the tripod, the price dropped by £30 :(

The friction bearings have gone on mine. So my plan, is to save up and buy a used 70-200 f2.8, get the 100-400mm repaired and serviced, sell that, then buy a 300 f4. I have had some great shots from my 100-400, but I have decided I no longer want it.
