    Shooting in manual mode

If you want your settings consistent across a number of shots. Sometimes the camera doesn't meter spot on manual mode gets around this. I wouldn't use it all the time manual mode has its place just like the other modes

Taking my kit to the next level, £5000 Budget?

    Good lens choices. You'll have wide, low light and long range covered. You could get 5D III with a 16-35mm f2.8 L, 50mm 1.2 L and a 70-200mm 2.8 L for that if you buy from the right places! Primes could be 24mm 1.4 L, 50mm 1.2 L and 135mm f2 L. Or D800 with 14-24mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4 G and 70-200mm...

    best gloves?

I have a pair of Montane Powerydry gloves. Light enough that you can feel the camera and warm with little rubber grips on the index finger and thumb. Cost about £15 iirc

Nikon to Canon - Logical or Mad?

Agree with what most above have said, the control layout is key. I ditched Canon for Nikon a while ago and it never quite felt right to me, always missed the big wheel on the back of Canons. I have since swapped back to Canon and gone FF at same time (5D2) after finding a good 2nd hand deal...

Looking for friendly Nikon upgrade advice!

Can't go wrong with D7000 or D700, both will feel like a massive upgrade. D7000 has a more modern with its feature set and control layout (auto focus button, live view switch etc) but D700 is a classic, great build and awesome low-light. Whether there's a difference in image quality between them...

    Nikon 50mm F/1.4D AF

I had it on my D7000. Its a fantastic lens and produces lovely I pictures but if you've got the 35 already then I'd probably get something longer like an 85mm 1.8.

would you buy a non gen battery grip

I'd probably get a copy first, considering the usually massive price difference, if I used it a lot then I'd consider paying the extra for the genuine.

    Canon EF 100mm f2 or f2.8 Macro?

I'd probably have gone withe 85 1.8 or 135 f/2 for your situation but the 100 f/2 is a good middle ground :)

    Upgrade options from Nikon D50

D7000, you'll only want one if you buy its predecessor or the lower model ;)

    £160 to spend - Nikon AF-S 35mm 1.8 a good choice?

Good choice, a fast prime was the biggest hole in your kit.

    Nikon lens advice please.

My choice would be primes, keep the 18-105mm for wide angle/general purpose and for the price of some of the other lenses talked about here you could pick up a 35mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.8G and maybe an 85mm 1.8 too. Way better quality.

    New to DSLRs

I'd go for a Canon 500D/550D/600D depending on what offers you can find.

Small Compact Camera For Street Photography.

I've had no problems with the X100, I think the newer batches are fine. When I've done street photography with it, I have still felt too self conscious to use the viewfinder, which is the main reason I bought it, I ended up just hip shooting.
